Yo, this is DancingFighterG. I wanted to get people's thoughts on the pot value for all the events that host that are fighting game based. Since we host a variety of events that are both large and small I wanted to get consist on the size of pots for all games. We have done the following so far:

Pot Fee for Fighting Games:

Small Events - $5
Big Events - $10

Now there are pros and cons to both.

Pros:

-$5 pot fee for small events allows people to enter more tournament
-10 pot fee for all events gives more money to win

Cons:

-A $5 pot fee is smaller for people to win money
-Having a $10 pot fee for all our events limits people to play in only 1 or 2 tournaments. We do a lot of events

Since we only place payout the top 2 at small-medium events and at big events we top 3 I say we keep the pot fee $10 for all games in majors i.e. CCCT, Fighter Frenzy, SuperCon, Major, King of the Springs and Other Major series and $5 for all other events but vary the amount paid out based on attendance i.e. 8 and below - Winner take all, 9-32 and below = Top 2 paid out (70%, 30%) 32+ = Top 3 get paid out (60%, 30%, 10%). This would include for Smash or any team event that the pot fee for small events would be $5 per person per team while Cutthroat majors we do $10 per person per tema i.e. entering teams would have a pot fee of $20 per team

Right now it's very hard when preparing an event with pre-registration if an event needs to be $5 or $10 so a price point needs to be set early. Of course with events like the Holiday Bash where there is no pot fee then we don't have to worry about this. The FPS scene demands at least $10 so it's no brainer for them.

Yo, this is DancingFighterCT

pot fees are NOT the problem that we are complaining about
VENUE fees are our big concern and allow me to explain

Holiday Bash was my first colorado tourney and I throuly enjoyed only paying $20 and playing/entering tourneys for any game I wanted

I attended FF knowing it would cost more but good god man, I was not ready for this
I live in the springs and im sure most FF attendees are from across the state like me... so lets break it down..

$20 gas to drive to denver
$15 venue fee (I brought a wii and recieved $5 off the $20)
$5 smash doubles
$10 smash singles
20 + 15 + 5 + 10 = 50
I couldnt afford to enter blazblue or melee (two games I love) because it would cost another $10
and im lucky that I didnt have to pay for PARKING (WTF!?)

you need to take these things into consideration if you are holding a state-wide tourney.
$10 for singles is fine for major stuff
$5 for smaller events is fine
$5 per person for doubles is fine anytime

paying for parking and paying $20 just to get in the doors is just wrong.
you have sponsors for these events, let me remind you what they do
"Sponsorship is a cash and/or in-kind fee paid to a property in return for access to the exploitable commercial potential associated with that property."

They pay you, you pay your staff/bills/venue/whatever, you do NOT pass along more fees to the attendees of your event.
its hard enough just to keep a gaming community alive, but we arent rich and cant afford to drive across state and pay huge amounts of money just to enter a sponsored event

I know what you are going to respond with:
register online and save $5
we provide drinks/food

registering online is a good idea, but dont pass along MORE charges to us
I attempted to register online and after doing most of the steps I was going to end up paying something like $16.73 because you were going to make me pay the pay-pal fees
pre-registering should be $5 which means you cover the pay-pal fee and in return you get to know how many people are actually committed to showing up to your event and you can inform your sponsors how many people you expect will see their advertising.. also paying $5 online is completely easy for anyone to do and they would not mind getting it over with, its one less thing to worry about
$5 venue fee is fine in person as well, like I said, online registration is for YOUR benefit, not theirs

as far as food goes, ok maybe.. but there is no way you can afford to comfortably feed every person in your event, let people worry about their own food, or provide cheap snacks like popcorn bags or something

I think I covered as much as I can, please dont take this personally, as a fellow TO from texas I know my shit and Ive held VERY successful tourneys in the past
also dont judge me on my english, im a computer science major, not an english major :P

Yo, this is DancingFighterG. This is the type of feedback that I want. Don't worry nothing personal to me. I just want to know from a community standpoint what people think and how to balance that with the business requirements. Ok, let me provide some solutions and comments.

Paying for parking:

Did you pay for parking? If you left afer 7:00pm you didn't have to pay for parking. Where did you park?

Pot fees for majors and smaller events:

-Ok noted and I'm fine with that

Sponsor participation:

Tenders, your thoughts on sponsors is correct in the sense that a sponsor CAN provide money but you must also understand that sponsors can also provide prizes/swag, etc, etc instead of money. As of right now Cutthroat sponsors provide us with items, locations, prizes, etc, etc to make the event worth more. Thus the venue fee that is charged goes to paying staff and other additional bills for the event. We are working towards have sponsors pay for us and we are getting there but it takes a little time. We are very close though.

Paypal Charges:

The charges is something that at first we were forced to do for SuperCon last year but now we have figured out a way to handle the charges so going foward the charges will disappear. It took us some time to do somethings but we final found a solution. Remember to that we do provide pre-reg prizes. As for the food the reason why we have the venue fee at $20 at the door is to accomondate for the food expense. If people want to get rid of the food expense that is fine with me but Cutthroat can get food at discount price. We will look into cheap snacks that we can provide. With that being said this is what I would see for small events and big evetns

Small Events (ranbats and fighter frenzy):

-$10 venue fee (pre-registration)
-$15 venue fee (door)
-$5 pot for all fighting game events
$10 per team / $5 per team for doubles

Big Events (CCCT, SuperCon, etc, etc):

-$15 venue fee (pre-registration)
-$20 venue fee (door)
-$10 pot for all fighting game events
-$20 per team / $10 per team for doubles

Note: The higher venue for bigger events because the cost to do high quality big events cost more. This is standard for other bigs events like Evo, Devastation, etc, etc. The only differnce you get pre-prizes, raffle items, etc, etc for pre-reg. This is something unique to Colorado Cutthroat and other NVGA chapters. Also remember you get free play in all the games for the entire event. For SuperCon you had access to anime, workshops, panels and variety of other activities for the weekend.

Thanks for all the feedback and don't worry I have my degree in computer science as well so I understand the english thing. Final someone gives me feedback without the worry that they I going to shun them. Thanks Tenders!! It shall be done!!

Smaller event: $5 dollar venue fee. Paying staff? Most people who help run tournies do it...just to do it. I can maybe(I.E. not really) see paying staff for a larger event but otherwise, no.

Parking: Yea, I think you need to talk with them and maybe get them to issue a voucher for those attending the tournies or something. It's a pain paying for parking down there sometimes.

Yo, this is DancingFighterg. Tkid, Colorado Cutthroat is a BUSINESS and NOT A CLUB. That being said the work that the staff puts in to make the events professional, work well and high quality deserve competition. People really don't know all the preperation and work that goes into doing events. Since I've been doing this for over 8 years it definitly work so those people involved deserve to be compenstating for the professional work that they help with Cutthroat. It's no different then any other BUSINESS!!
